Page numbers on PDF

Choose where the number goes and which number to start from. You can skip the cover and have “1” land on the following page. The PDF never leaves your device.

How it works

The number is written over the content like a stamp: what was underneath stays intact and the document stays searchable. On rotated pages the number appears upright and in the right corner for the reader. “Pages” decides which pages get one, “Start at” which number goes on the first of them — both in the advanced options: write 2- and leave 1, and the cover stays clean while the second page carries “1”.

Frequently asked questions

With “Page 1 of N”, is N the total number of pages?
It’s the highest number that appears, not the file’s total. If you skip the cover of a 12-page document and start at 1, the last page reads “Page 11 of 11”. With the starting settings — every page, beginning at 1 — the two are the same.
How do I number a document split across several PDFs?
Merge them first with “Merge PDFs” and number the result: the numbering runs through the whole document. Alternatively, number one file at a time and set “Start at”, in the advanced options, to the number after the last page of the previous file.
Should I number the pages before or after reordering them?
After. The number is written onto the page, so if you then move or remove pages with “Organise PDF pages”, the numbers travel with their pages and the sequence breaks. Put the document in order first, then number it.
The number lands on top of the text: what can I do?
The content isn’t moved to make room, so move the number instead: pick another position, such as the top, reduce the size, which goes from 6 to 24 points, or change the distance from the edge, from 5 to 30 mm. Size and distance are in the advanced options.
