Merge, split, compress and reorganise documents.
The order things go in
This is the largest section of the site, and the only one where the sequence genuinely matters. Two rules apply to every page below.
- The password goes last. No other tool can open a protected PDF: if you protect it and then notice a page is missing, you have to remove the password before you can touch it again.
- Metadata comes off at the end. Every step that rewrites the document can put the software name and the dates back in. If the file has to leave clean, Remove PDF metadata is the last thing you do before handing it over.
On size: Compress PDF does a lot to a scan, where the weight is the images, and much less to a text-only document, where there is barely anything to reclaim. If the PDF only has to be read and not printed, shrinking the images before putting them in usually wins.
On what cannot be undone: Redact PDF really does remove the text from under the black, but the pages it touches become images and stop being selectable and searchable — only those pages. And Merge, Split and Organise pages always produce a new file: the original stays where it is, and it is the thing to keep until you have opened and checked the result.
